Research Ethics & Consent

Last updated: 5 September 2025

Introduction

Ethical standards are the foundation of trustworthy research. At Hesperion, we are committed to ensuring that every study we undertake respects the dignity, autonomy, and rights of participants. This page explains our approach to ethics and how we manage consent in research participation.

1. Ethical principles we follow

  • Respect for persons: Participation in any Hesperion initiative is voluntary. We always seek informed consent before collecting or analyzing data.
  • Beneficence: We design studies to maximize benefit and minimize risks to participants.
  • Justice: We strive for fairness, ensuring that the burdens and benefits of research are shared equitably.
  • Transparency: We provide clear information about what participation involves, including how data will be used and protected.

2. Informed consent

  • Consent is collected in writing through secure digital forms or other approved methods.
  • Participants may withdraw their consent at any time without penalty.
  • Consent forms clearly describe the purpose of the study, the type of data collected, potential risks, and the safeguards in place.
  • No participation is required to access general information on our website or chatbot.

3. Protection of health-related data

When research involves health-related information, data is processed only in de-identified or pseudonymized form. We follow GDPR Article 9(2)(j) for scientific research purposes, with strict safeguards in place. Identifiable medical records are not collected through the public website.

4. Oversight and approvals

  • Where required, research protocols are submitted to ethical review boards or regulatory authorities in Norway or the EU.
  • We collaborate with medical professionals, legal experts, and patient representatives to ensure ethical compliance.
  • Each project documents ethical approvals and data handling safeguards before initiation.

5. Participant rights

As a participant, you have the right to:

  • Ask questions and receive clear answers before joining a study.
  • Withdraw your consent at any point without negative consequences.
  • Request access to or deletion of your personal data (where applicable).
  • Receive information about study outcomes, when appropriate.
